Freedom Rock
2010-03-08

On March 12, another of our Digital Intermediate projects will hit Polish cinema screens. This time it is a documentary about the emergence of rock music in Poland – “Beats of Freedom – zew wolności”, directed by Leszek Gnoiński, with camera work by Wojciech Słota. The film was produced by The Adam Mickiewicz Institute and television channel TVN. It is a colourful collection of memories from musicians, journalists and people involved in Polish rock music, combined with archival material – pictures, concert footage and newsreels. It is an unforgettable trip in time, allowing a rare insight into how Polish rock created history. The film’s soundtrack is filled with powerful classic tracks from bands such as Maanam, Kult, Tilt or Republika. “Beats of Freedom” won the Special Award in November 2009 at the Polish Film Festival in Chicago. Now, it can be viewed in Polish cinemas in traditional 35 mm projection or from digital copies which have been made by us at Chimney.

Commercial campaigns from Plus
2010-01-25

At the turn of the year, we worked on comprehensive post production of two major campaigns for Polkomtel. It was yet another very successful cooperation with PZL Agency.
The first campaign – “Plus Christmas” – comprised of two 30-second television commercials with Mumio comedy troupe (Kowalik and Small Head), and three spots of the “Snowman warmly recommends” series done entirely in 3D.
The second campaign – “Plus Wielka Oszcz” – included another full post production of a television commercial with Mumio comedy troupe, animation for three tags, as well as preparation work for outside advertising billboards.
Both campaigns were colour graded by Ola Kraus, most other work was done by our 3D graphic artists: Kamil Grzelak, Marcin Drabiński, Tomek Witkowski, Grzegorz Bałazy and Krzysiek Kozłowski.
You can check the end results of our efforts by visiting our commercial portfolio section.

Masters, copies and keys – digital dimension of cinema
2010-01-20

Digital cinema, and consequently the distribution of digital copies, is making big leaps forward on the Polish cinema market – and we have our own undisputed contribution to it. Last September, we participated in a pioneering venture – Poland’s first digital distribution, handled by Syrena Films, of “Janosik. The True Story”, directed by Agnieszka Holland and Kasia Adamik, with cinematography by Martin Štrba. We ended the film’s DI process with recording to film stock and, more importantly, with the making of a master for digital cinema. Then, “Janosik’s” digital copies, together with the key, were sent to cinemas around Poland, as well as the Czech Republic and Slovakia. But that’s not all – we also made digital cinema masters and distribution copies with keys for „The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler”, „Handlarz cudów”, „Beats of Freedom”, „Rewers” and   „Rabbit à la Berlin”. Who will be next?

Syta Street in first taxi zone

Water Campaign
2009-07-27

„Little water is a torture” – that’s the catch phrase from the latest Water Campaign by the Polish Humanitarian Action. Together with FireFly agency, we have created a television promo with striking visuals. Our graphics artists Janek Białek made a series of drawings which he later scanned and digitally animated. This original 25-second spot can be viewed in our Commercials Gallery section. The purpose of the nationwide PHA Campaign is to raise public awareness to the problem of drinking water access and deficiency.                The promo’s visuals draw on the Chinese water torture where drops of water fall on a victim’s head at short intervals causing physical and psychological pain. The same level of pain can be felt when being denied access to drinking water. A dedicated web-page has been set up for the action:  www.wodapitna.pl. The campaign will run until mid-August.

The Saga of the Prehistoric Forest
2009-07-21

We are currently drawing to the end of a long-term feature project called
“The Saga of the Prehistoric Forest”, one of the most ambitious production ever in the history of Polish nature films. After seven years of work, we have completed ten 52-minute episodes in this outstanding story. The series’ creators – Jan and Bożena Walencik – paint a picture of the Białowieża Forest through the eyes and lives of animals which become each episode’s main character: Wolf, Ant, Crow, Żubr (European bison), Beatle, Boar, Bank Vole, Beaver, Owl and Lynx. Our involvement in “The Saga” dates back to 2002. From the very first episode we post produced each film by doing one-light transfers, editing, online, colour grading as well as creating and inserting titles. We have enjoyed working on this project, especially since it is a one of a kind production, a Polish nature feature film – and an outstanding, cutting edge achievement of its creators’. Our congratulations!

Submarine Simplus
2009-07-13

We have finished yet another commercial in Simplus’ ‘feature film series’ campaign. After soap opera, western, thriller and French Revolution,
we worked on a submarine. As was the case with previous spots, this one also came from the duo of Maciej Kowalczuk (director) and Bartek Kaczmarek (DOP). Colour grading was done in the Spirit telecine by Stephen Kent, while special effects and online finish were created by Krzysztof Pucuła. We made 15- and 30-second cuts for television and a 45-second version for cinemas.

Demakijaż after DI
2009-06-24

We have finished another DI job – the “Demakijaż” project. It came into being as part of the “30 minutes” program run by the Andrzej Munk young filmmakers’ Studio “Młodzi i Film”, part of Polish Filmmakers’ Association. “Demakijaż” consists of three half-hour stories: “Non stop kolor”
(dir. Marysia Sadowska , DOP: Jeremi Prokopowicz), „Droga wewnętrzna”
(dir. Dorota Lamparska, DOP:  Damian Pietrasik) and „Pokój szybkich randek”
(dir. Anna Maliszewska, DOP: Dominik Danilczyk). The shorts were colour graded in Nucoda Film Master by Ola Kraus and Steve Kent. “Demakijaż” had its cinema premiere during out-of-competition screenings at the 28. Koszalin Festival of Film Debuts “Młodzi i Film”, June 16-20.

Orange line of words
2009-06-22

Orange’s Line of Words is the latest tv commercial which we post produced for mobile communications company PTK Centertel. The spot was directed and shot by Łukasz Kośmicki. Our own Ola Kraus handled the commercial’s final transfer in the Spirit telecine. All of the special effects – the graphics, animation and online finish – were done by the head of our 3D team,
Kamil Grzelak. Check it out in our Commercials Portfolio section.

U Pana Boga trilogy
2009-06-22

Friday June 19 was the opening night for the third installment in the popular trilogy from Jacek Bromski (director) and Ryszard Lenczewski (DOP) – “U Pana Boga za miedzą”. The title is another addition to our fast growing list of Digital Intermediate feature posts. The original material – shot on 35mm negative – was scanned and conformed. Wiktor Sasim colour graded the film in Nucoda. The finished picture was then recorded to film for cinema screenings. Parallel to that, we worked on the television series.

Reconstruction of early Zanussi
2009-06-19

“Śmierć prowincjała” was made in 1965 by Krzysztof Zanussi as his director’s diploma film (Jan Hesse was DOP), and we have just finished its digital reconstruction. The 28-minute black-and-white piece was digitally cleaned – we removed scratches, repaired damaged frames, masked edit cuts and reduced strobing. On June 17, the film had its digital premiere screening at Dom Kultury “Świt”, the event being organized by the KINO RP group which we are part of. The showing accompanied a day-long seminar “Digital heritage – future culture” held in the Polish Parliament building. The seminar was organized by Polish Program Committee “Informacja dla Wszystkich” under
the auspices of the Polish UNESCO Committee. The KINO RP group took part
in a discussion which focused on the reconstruction of Polish cinema classics.

New DI projects
2009-06-10

It is really hot season for us at Chimney, when it comes to feature film projects. We have just finished post production of three features in Digital Intermediate technology, and the films are now waiting for their cinema debuts. They are:
„Jestem twój” (director – Mariusz Grzegorzek, DOP – Szymon Lenkowski) – it was our first post production of a feature entirely shot with a RED camera
„Las” (director – Piotr Dumała, DOP – Adam Sikora)
„U Pana Boga za miedzą” (director – Jacek Bromski, DOP – Ryszard Lenczewski)

And all this while we have more DI projects in the pipeline in various stages of post: „Piksele” (directed by Jacek Lusiński), „Janosik” (directed by Agnieszka Holland and Kasia Adamik) and „Handlarz Cudów” (directed by Jarosław Szoda and Bolesław Pawica).

Open’er is getting closer
2009-06-08

Heineken Open’er Festival in Gdynia is getting ever so closer – this year it will be held on July 2-5. The big music event has already earned the recognition as being one of Europe’s most important international summer festivals.
This year’s cinema and television campaign for Open’er, created by Grey agency, also saw our own input. We made 90-second cinema version in 2K,
as well as sponsorship billboards for television. The ads were colour graded by Ola Kraus and edited by Andrzej Kowalski. The green sphere and other 3D effects were created by our graphic artists, while 2D animation and on-line finish were done by Paweł Falkowski. Check out the end result in the Commercials Portfolio section of our web page.

Presentation at Forum Around Cinema 2009
2009-06-05

The 27th Forum Around Cinema held its summer session at the town of Iława on June 2-4. The Forum’s second day focused on technological changes in the film industry, with the main theme of digital technology. Such focus prompted us to have our say in the discussion. In a special session held at Iława’s “Pasja” cinema theatre, Jędrzej Sabliński and Kamil Rutkowski presented our expertise in the preparation of film material for digital cinema. They talked about the preparation of copies in DCP (Digital Cinema Package) format, explained specialist terminology, and illustrated the subject matter with a 15-minute long digital screening of films made by us in 2K. Yet again, we proved that new technologies are no strangers to us.

Support for social campaign
2009-05-04

“Don’t waste food. Trash your old habits” – that is the slogan of a nationwide social campaign organized by the Polish Food Banks’ Federation. The campaign’s aim is to raise public awareness on the negative ecological, social and economic effects of wasting food. As part of our support for this project we made free broadcast tapes with the campaign’s commercials for television screenings. And as the campaign’s partners we recommend a visit to its web page: www.niemarnuje.pl.

2009-04-27

On April 23, sixth Węgiel (Coal) Student Film Festival came to the end. It was part of open days at the Silesian University’s Radio and Television Department. The festival’s aim is to showcase short films made by film students from around Poland. Traditionally, our company funded the award for the winner in the best pictures category. This year, colour grading session in our telecine was won by Kacper Fertacz for his work on two films: “Grandma is going away” (directed by Tomasz Jurkiewicz) and “I know who did it” (directed by Jan P. 2009-04-23

On Wednesday, April 22, Multikino at Złote Tarasy in Warsaw held the official premiere of ”Tatarak”, directed by Andrzej Wajda, with cinematography by Paweł Edelman. Commercial for VH1
2009-04-14

We can boast of VH1 Microcosmos commercial, one of the two spots which we have prepared for Lowe GGK agency. The main goal of this work was to process record covers to create an impression of depth and three-dimensionality by overlapping elements - the animation and compositing were done by Janek Białek. The Agency has entered this commercial in this year’s KTR contest. You can watch it on our web page in the Commercials Gallery section.

4K DI which we can be proud of!

The whole post production process was handled in 2K resolution – from preparation of files for editing, done by Andrzej Kowalski, through colour grading of RAW files on Nucoda by Ola Kraus, to online finish by Paweł Falkowski. For television purposes, we made a PAL broadcast version, while for cinemas we recorded a 45-second cut in 2K.

New ”Hourglass Sanatorium”
2009-03-04

The Chimney Pot belongs to KINO RP – a group of companies with goal
to save damaged Polish feature films. We made our debut in advanced digital image restoration when we did repair work on "Hourglass Sanatorium", a 1973 film by director Wojciech J. Has. All of the material received High Definition treatment. Witold Sobociński, the film's cinematographer, oversaw the colour grading sessions with colourist Stephen Kent.
The film was digitally cleaned – we removed scratches, defects, repaired damaged frames. The restored classic had its cinema premiere in February, and will soon return to the big screens for special showings. We also plan distribution of "…Sanatorium"
in digital format, as we believe that the new look of this archival picture deserves to be published. For now, we have stared work on another digital reconstruction of a Polish classic. The power of our Revival system will ensure full "rejuvenation" of a 1964 black-and-white cult film by Wojciech J. Has, "The Saragossa Manuscript", with cinematography by Mieczysław Jahoda.

Prize for ”Tatarak”
2009-02-18

Andrzej Wajda’s “Tatarak” was awarded the Alfred Bauer Prize at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival which closed on February 15. The name of the Prize honours the creator of the Berlinale festival, and each year the Prize goes to a film that “opens new perspectives in the art of filmmaking.”
This prestigious recognition is also called an “award for innovation”. We, too, feel honoured as we had our own contribution to this picture – we fully postproduced the film in Digital Intermediate 2K. Ola Kraus colour graded the picture under the watchful eye of its DOP, Paweł Edelman. We also worked on special effects in on-line and 3D departments. The opening titles and credits were created by Radek Rekita.
Congratulations!

Another of our DI projects in cinemas
2009-02-05

January 29 saw the premiere of „Idealny facet dla mojej dziewczyny” (Ideal man for my girlfriend), the third production from the creators of „Lejdis” and „Testosteron” – screenwriter Andrzej Saramonowicz, director Tomasz Konecki and cinematographer Tomasz Madejski. The new film – like the previous two box office hits – was postproduced by Chimney in the Digital Intermerdiate technology. Colour grading was done in Nucoda by Ola Kraus, while opening titles, end credits and ‘cosmic’ interval titles were created by Paweł Falkowski.

"Tatarak" at Berlinale
2009-01-29

Andrzej Wajda’s latest motion picture “Tatarak” has been selected for the main competition at the 59. International Film Festival in Berlin, this year held February 5-15. The film, shot by Paweł Edelman, ends a long break in Poland’s fight for the Golden Bear Award. We are proud of this selection as we played a major role in creating the film’s final look, contributing full post production in Digital Intermediate technology, as well as special effects from our 3D
and on-line crews. Ola Kraus colour graded the picture, while opening titles and credits were created by Radek Rekita.
And as for Berlinale – we keep our fingers crossed!

Esterhazy Bunny
2009-01-20

We have completed work on “Esterhazy”, an animated film directed by Izabela Plucińska. The screenplay was adapted from a German children’s book by the same title, written by Irene Dische and Hans Magnus Enzensberger.
It’s a story of a small bunny from Vienna, called Esterhazy, who comes to Berlin in search of a wife. The project is a classic play dough animation.
The footage came to us on disks as a sequence of frames, which Ola Kraus digitally colour graded using Nucoda Film Master. The 24-minute work was then recorded to film.

Nesvita by 3D
2008-12-22

We want to give a big round of applause to our 3D department for their work on the „Nesvita: my ideal breakfast” commercial which is part of a campaign
introducing and promoting a new product – a breakfast cereal from Nestle Polska. The idea for the spot came from the Publicis agency, making it
a challenge for our guys in 3D, but also – an opportunity to show off their skill. Our graphics artists proved their worth generating two exotic animals and making them move in a natural way. You can check the shark and the sloth
in the “Nesvita” ad in our commercial portfolio section.

Christmas Orange
2008-12-18

We have post produced a series of commercials for this year’s top-loaded Christmas campaign by Orange. It features the “Orange Christmas” ads
complemented by the Orange Postpaid tag campaign (we worked on six of those adds). The projects provided us with yet another opportunity to
do post in 2K and produce 2K pictures for cinema screenings. As in previous such productions, Nucoda was used to colour grade the images, and after the on-line, the finished films were shown to our clients on our digital cinema’s large screen. We downgraded the pictures to PAL for television broadcast.

New work from "Wilk"
2008-12-16

We met Mariusz “Wilk” Wilczyński while recording to film his animated work
“Kizi Mizi”. As it turned out, it was the beginning of a much longer relationship.
Over the next two years, we will work together with “Wilk” post-producing his new animated project which he will both, write and direct. The musical score comes from the legendary blues musician, Tadeusz Nalepa, who died in 2007. We will keep you updated on the progress of our work.

Commercial spots in high resolution
2008-10-22

We are proud to announce that we have postproduced two commercial projects, giving them full 2K and HD treatment from start to finish.
The first spot – “Simplus Western” – was directed by Maciej Kowalczuk and shot by Bartek Kaczmarek, while the second – “Multibank” – was directed and shot by Bartek Cierlica. After colour grading at Nucoda, the files went through the whole postproduction chain – off-line, on-line, with additional computer animation – in high resolution. For television screenings, we downgraded the spots to PAL. The final presentation took place in our own digital cinema, on a big screen. Such presentations of commercials done in high resolutions are yet another advancement in quality offered by Chimney. Later, we recorded both
spots on film stock for screenings in cinemas where the pictures look really impressive.

„Tomorrow it will be better”
2008-10-09

„Tomorrow it will be better” is the latest feature film from the magic pair of film-makers: Dorota Kędzierzawska and Arthur Reinhart.
It is a story of three young boys running away from their grim reality, trying to fulfill their dreams. The film was shot last summer in the picturesque Suwałki region. After successful tests, Arthur Reinhart decided to use digital RED camera which is a first for a feature production in Poland.
For The Chimney Pot it is yet another opportunity to break new ground in post production, allowing us to engage in work with the very latest film technology. To learn more about the post production on this project check out our news section in the upcoming weeks.
The film will have its premiere in 2009.

The Chimney Party
2008-09-19

September 5th was a very special day in the history of The Chimney Pot in Warsaw – we loudly celebrated the company’s 10th anniversary and the opening of our new house. Almost 400 guests walked the red carpet to the awaiting attractions – tasty international cuisine, exotic drinks, birthday cake, club music presented by Michael Moritz and DJ Ros & Wiosna, and the casino. The party went on for 7 hours, additionally fueled by the unseasonally warm weather.
We would like to thank everyone who spent that hot evening with us!

Restored "Sanatorium pod klepsydrą" on Kino Polska tv channel
2008-03-25

On March 26, at 8pm, tv channel Kino Polska will premiere digitally restored "Sanatorium pod klepsydrą", directed by Wojciech Jerzy Has, cinematography by Witold Sobociński. We started renovation work on the picture in High Definition in the fall of last year, using Spirit da Vinci 2K+, Digital Vision's DVNR grain reducer and Revival from daVinci. The archival film was digitally cleaned by us - we removed scratches, defects and repaired damaged frames.
Digital restoration is a relatively new notion in the Polish film industry.
With the experience gained on "Sanatorium pod klepsydrą", we are now eager to take on more such challanges. We encourage everyone to check out the results of our work on Kino Polska - for more details go to: http://www.kinopolska.pl

International travels by "Pora umierać"
2008-01-18

"Pora umierać" (Time to Die) - directed by Dorota Kędzierzawska, and shot by Arthur Reinhart - has just had its American premiere at the Palm Springs Film Festival (January 3-14). Soon, it will be screened at three other international festivals - in Trieste, Santa Barbara and Göteborg. The film premiered in Poland on October 17, 2007. "Pora umierać" is one of our proud achievements - work on the film was a technological adventure, as the picture had been shot on Fuji colour negative, and we turned it into a black-and-white positive!

4K presentation in Berlin and Paris
2008-01-14

Andrzej Wajda's "Katyń", with Paweł Edelman's camera work, will be shown at the 58th International Film Festival in Berlin, this year held on February 7-17. It is another opportunity for us to promote a production which we are very proud of, and which is also a European technological debut - a whole feature post produced in Digital Intermediate 4K technology. "Katyń" has been digitally processed in the highest resolution. The final 4K picture being screened in cinemas carries more than 14 million pixels in each frame, compared to "just" 3,5 million in the traditional 2K resolution. Thus, work in 4K allows for more details to be reproduced in the picture. It is made possible by a well-planned Digital Intermediate process involving work with the following systems: Arriscan, Nucoda Data Conform, Nucoda Film Master and ArriLaser. All of "Katyń's" production material took up approx. 24 TB of disk space - it was more than 1 million various computer files.

Our 4K work had a successful presentation last September, at IBC in Amsterdam, and soon it will be showcased in Paris at the International Digital Film Forum (January 30 - February 1).

New DI projects
2007-12-27

Two new Polish feature films are currently undergoing the Digital Intermediate treatment. "Lejdis" (Ladies) was directed by Tomasz Konecki, shot by Tomasz Madejski and produced by Andrzej Saramonowicz, so it comes from the same people who brought us the popular comedy "Testosteron". The other feature is a romantic comedy called "Mała wielka miłość" (Little big love), and it was directed by Łukasz Karwowski, shot by Arek Tomiak and produced by Anna Iwaszkiewicz. Colour grading for both films was done on Nucoda Film Master by Ola Kraus. They will open in cinemas in February 2008.

IBC 2007
2007-09-28

We had an unprecedented opportunity to present Chimney's achievements in Digital Intermediate technology at this year's IBC in Amsterdam.
On September 8, we took part in a panel organized by ARRI to showcase 4K technology. During a special presentation, we talked about our post production of Andrzej Wajda's Katyń, Europe's most innovative production to date, in terms of its post production technology; a feature which we fully produced in 4K. It was a highly emotional moment for us, considering that the panel was also attended by representatives of Hollywood companies, Efilm and FotoKem, which have done 4K on almost 20 features, such as Spiderman 2, Ocean's 12 or Jarhead.
After the presentation, we heard a lot of positive comments from the participants and industry representatives.

Rejuvenation of "Sanatorium Pod Klepsydrą"
2007-09-07

We are renovating "Sanatorium Pod Klepsydrą" for the TV channel Kino Polska. The rejuvenation is being done in High Definition. It is our contribution to the promotion
of this modern technology in Poland, which is gaining in popularity in the TV industry.

Colour grading was done by Wiktor Sasim under the watchful eye of Witold Sobociński - the film's cinematographer. Da Vinci 2K+ was used for the job. The rejuvenation work also includes digital cleaning - scratch and defect removal, as well as repairs to damaged frames. The new look of "Sanatorium Pod Klepsydrą" by Wojciech Jerzy Has will be ready this fall.

Colour grading off a projector
2007-07-20

Following the example of Western post production houses, we have installed a JVC full-HD digital projector for colour grading. It demonstrates outstanding colour and contrast stability, and produces great results when used for colour grading of feature films and cinema commercials. The projector has been carefully calibrated for a high-fidelity transfer of a colour-graded picture from the computer to the big screen.

Commercial in HD
2007-07-20

Advanced technologies now make more frequent appearances in the production of Polish commercials. Recently, we have post produced one such commercial for Telekomunikacja Polska - "Screens" (Ekrany), directed and shot by Artur Reinhart for Testardo Red Cell agency. A Genesis HD camera was used on the set, equipped with a hothead which allows  three-axis movement. Our graphics guys had to reproduce the camera's exact movements in 3D environment to insert screens visible in the finished commercial.
